Punk Rock People Management FRONT COVERby Peter Cook

Punk Rock People Management strips down HR to the bare essentials for busy people and those who are sick of HR jargon getting in the way of running a business. In the spirit of punk, each chapter is just one page long, which means that you can read a chapter in less time than it takes to pogo to a Sex Pistols or Linkin Park song! Punk Rock People Management is organised using the classic Life, Sex and Death HR cycle, in other words Hiring, Inspiring and Firing. If you have to get things done with people and can’t get no satisfaction from an HR textbook, try Punk Rock People Management for a refreshing difference.

As someone who made a career out of bending and breaking the rules, Punk Rock People Management comes as a refreshing alternative to the tyrannies of work. As The Doctors of Madness were the virus that gave birth to Punk Rock, Peter Cook is the cure for HR.  Take a pill three times daily.

Having run The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in Kent, been a board member and worked with HR people for too many years to remember, I have had deep experience of the good, bad and ugly of a profession that is (a) essential since people matter and (b) essentially confused since some HR people have no idea how to deal with people. Having suffered lengthy meetings with no results, I decided it was time for something simpler, shorter and more authentic than the usual “War and Peace” HR textbooks.

In Punk Rock People Management, I have stripped down HR to the bare essentials for busy people and those who are sick of HR jargon getting in the way of running a business.

Punk Rock People Management is about three things that are desperately needed in the HR profession: Simplicity, Brevity and Authenticity. Just like a punk rock song, keep it simple, keep it brief and keep it real.

In the punk spirit, each chapter is very short, so you can read one in less time than it takes to pogo to a Sex Pistols or Linkin Park song! On hearing this, Tom Peters, the world’s greatest business thinker, author and speaker tweeted me two words: “Do it!” Now that’s economy!

Punk Rock People Management is organised using the classic ‘Life, Sex and Death HR cycle’, in other words Hiring, Inspiring and Firing. To whet your appetite, chapter titles include:

• Selection – Shall I stay or shall I go?

• Engagement – Pretty vacant

• Conflict – Who killed Bambi?

If you have to get things done with people and can’t get no satisfaction from an HR textbook, try Punk Rock People Management for a refreshing difference.
