Maria C McCarthy will be launching As Long as it Takes at the University of Kent on 12 February 2014 at 6.00 pm. Please note that this will take place in Eliot College Staff Common Room; still at the University of Kent, but not at the venue previously advertised

The evening will be a celebration of short fiction, with guest readings from Maggie Harris, author of Canterbury Tales on a Cockcrow Morning, and Maggie Drury, who will be reading from the title story of our anthology Unexplored Territory.

There will also be a song from Jamie McCarthy to complement the stories of migration in both As Long as it Takes  and Canterbury Tales on a Cockcrow Morning.

Entrance is £2, which includes a glass of wine.

As Long as it Takes gives voice to the lost generation of Irish women who sailed to England to look for work in the middle of the twentieth century. Maura Flaherty and her daughters struggle with identity, belonging, love, sexuality and grief – and dilemmas such as whether to like punk or Elvis.

With no concessions to nostalgia or sentimentality, this deeply moving and beautifully written book, by a second-generation Irish writer, tells the interwoven stories of an immigrant family. Maria C. McCarthy skilfully weaves the historical and cultural significance of Anglo-Irish relations into a half-century of family life.

As Long as it Takes is due for publication February 2014
