Maria C. McCarthy has a long-standing relationship with orchards, ever since she moved into a house that backed onto an orchard in the village of Teynham, where Richard Harrys, fruiterer to Henry VIII, established the first cherry orchards in England. Maria is now living in Gillingham, close to Rainham Community Orchard. She was delighted to be part of a year-long project with other artists, chronicling a year in the orchard.

Orchard: Art Inspired by Rainham Community Orchard (previously on display at Rainham Library and Riverside Country Park) has now moved to The Oast Community Centre, Rainham. It is in the Wakeley Hall (Information correct in May 2019; as yet there is no end date for the exhibition). Access is dependent on activities taking place within the hall.

Maria’s pamphlet of poems on the disappearing orchards of Kent, with images by Sara Fletcher, is available exclusively from Cultured Llama Publishing for £7 plus p&p: There are Boats on the Orchard

Poem posters, like those on display in the Orchard exhibition, are available to purchase here: Poem Posters
